Missing Files

Postby rlh3 » Sun Feb 07, 2010 9:05 am

I was just going through and downloading the PDF Files of the Congressional hearings regarding the Pearl Harbor Attack at http://www.ibiblio.org/pha/congress/, and got several 404 notices. Specifically on parts 21, 25, 26, 31 and 38. Are these just broken links, or have the documents not been added to the site yet?

I'm waiting for a delivery of those volumes so I can scan them. There is quite a bit of paperwork involved in getting them out of a Repository Library and dissassembling them for scanning (the binding is very tight and some of the text vanishes into the seams.) The Mizzou Library tells me the box is en route now, and I'll have them online as fast as the scanner will allow. The good news I will be able to image the large sheets in Part 38 fully for the first time using a camera rig I've developed, so those items will be fully usable.

I'll post a note here and elsewhere when they're online. If you have a particular volume out of the missing ones you'd like to see done first feel free to ask. I'm not worried about strict numerical order by any means.

I have no real desire on order, It is just the completeist in me rearing up that caused me to ask.

Thank you for your efforts in this. I have paper copies of many of the books that are on these websites, but I have found that the HTML copies are easier to use, as they are searchable, they are also easier to carry around!

Definitely easier to carry around. My Pearl Harbor book collection is archived on disk in case of disaster. As I understand Windows 7 now searches PDF files for text this is a very good system for m.

I was trying to download an Army Technical manual and got a 404 message and checked several others and got the same message. Are the TM's due to be loaded any time soon?

Do you have the URL for the bad links? It helps in tracking them down and fixing them.

Hi you all on Hyperwar.
My name es Ernesto, I'm from Argentina.
I've just found this page, and from what I've just seen, it's one site I'll definitely going to be visiting a lot!
This kind of work, translating all this documents into digital format, putting them all together, for the historian, the enthusiast, or the amateur to read and learn, or work with...well...Is amazing.
I hope this site would continue on to grown further and larger. And as I'm seeing that all this material you have allready uploaded is just the beginning, I'm sure it will.
Let me tell you that, even If English is not my natural language, and even when I don't have all the time in the world to focus on it ( who has it?? :D ) I would gladly help you
transcrypting some documents. How about those about Japanese Army Air force units on Southern Pacific Theather, or China/Burma area? I really like the subject, and...well...just name one, I would gladly start on it, giving the right time.

My purpose here on this topic is however to report some broken links, I found them trying to download some particular documents...of course I couldn't :? .

This document is "Japanese Army Air Operations in the Philippines Area, part 2" ( I think this is the tittle?), also known as "Japanese Monographs Nº12".
The link would be this one

http://www.ibiblio.org/pha/monos/012/index.html

But most of the files on the same page are also missing. They all gave the same error message( 404).
Are this documents no longer available for any particular reason, or are they just missing at the time?

If, on the other hand, they are not YET available, then THOSE are the ones I would like to transcypt first

Anyway, thanks in advance for your answer!

Grettings

I've checked on that page, and what you're referring to is the overall index of Monographs that was provided when they were published. We hope to do all those at some point in the future. I'll check to see if we have a copy of Mono No. 12 we can digitize.

Okay, we're on the case to get a copy of No. 12 for conversion. I'll let you know when it's ready. We have other Philippine area files as well if/when you're ready for something else.

Ohh I see...as they appeared as download links on the "IJA" page, I thought they were available.

Sure! Please do so, and if you do have one, I would be interested in both reading and transcrypting this document ( if I may, please)

Greetings

Ernesto

I'll let you know where to grab it when it's ready for you. You'll have a PDF copy and an HTML or Word version, your choice. All you have to do is read the HTML and fix any "artifacts" (conversion errors) that appear in the HTML copy.

And many, many thanks for helping with this. Without volunteers we have a much slower rate of uploading documents. :salute:
